Updates to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time by posting a revised version on our website. Material changes will be noted on this page. Please review this policy occasionally to stay informed.
Important notice
VeloTape does not provide recommendations regarding specific securities to buy or sell, and we do not offer trading, investment, or financial advice. Content in the app reflects your own trading data and notes.
Overview
VeloTape helps traders record, analyze, and review their trading activity through a web application. To provide the service, we process account information, trading data you import or sync, and technical data needed to operate and secure the platform.
We share personal data with third parties only when necessary to provide the service, comply with law, or with your direction — as described below.
Personal data we collect
The data we collect depends on how you use VeloTape. You choose what trading data to import; we do not access your brokerage accounts beyond the import methods you authorize.
- Account data: When you register, our authentication provider (Clerk) processes identifiers such as your email address, name, and profile image if you provide one.
- Profile and preferences: Settings you save in VeloTape — such as locale, theme, metric display modes, and dashboard preferences.
- Trading journal data: Trades, tags, notes, attachments, playbooks, notebook entries, and analytics derived from data you import, sync, or enter manually.
- Broker connection data: If you use auto-sync, we store connection metadata and credentials encrypted at rest to fetch fills on your behalf. We use read-only import where supported.
- Device and log data: IP address, browser type, operating system, timestamps, and diagnostic logs when you use the website or app — used for security, abuse prevention, and troubleshooting.
- Cookies and similar technologies: Small files or storage entries on your device, described in the Cookies section below.
- Support communications: Information you send when contacting us by email or through in-app feedback.
- Usage data: Pages viewed, features used, and interaction events — including pseudonymous analytics described in the Analytics section.
How we use your information
We process personal data where necessary to deliver VeloTape, keep it secure, and improve it over time.
- Provide the service: Authenticate you, store your journal, run analytics, sync or import trades, and display your dashboards.
- Improve VeloTape: Understand how features are used, fix bugs, and develop new functionality.
- Security and fraud prevention: Detect abuse, protect accounts, and maintain platform integrity.
- Billing (when enabled): If paid plans are offered in the future, payment processors may collect billing details separately for subscription management.
When we share information
We do not sell your personal data. We share data with service providers that help us operate VeloTape, under contracts that require them to protect it.
- Clerk (authentication): Sign-in, session management, and account security.
- Convex (database and backend): Stores your journal data and runs server-side logic such as imports and analytics.
- Vercel (hosting): Serves the VeloTape website and application infrastructure.
- Google (analytics): Google Analytics and Google Search Console on our marketing site and web app, as described in the Analytics section.
- Brokers and data sources: Only when you connect a sync or upload a file — to retrieve or process the trading data you request.
- Legal requirements: When required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect the rights and safety of VeloTape, our users, or others.
Analytics and site measurement
We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console on velotape.com and related web properties. These tools help us understand how visitors find and use our site so we can improve content, performance, and onboarding.
Google may set cookies or use similar technologies and receive pseudonymous usage data such as pages visited, referral source, approximate geography, device/browser type, and interaction events. GA4 loads only after you accept analytics cookies in our banner (where required). We configure analytics to avoid collecting unnecessary personal fields from your journal.
- Google Analytics 4: Website and product usage measurement. Learn more at https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Google Search Console: Search performance, indexing status, and technical SEO data for our domains. Learn more at https://policies.google.com/privacy
- What we see: Aggregated and event-level usage patterns — not the contents of your trade notes or broker credentials.
- Your choices: Use our cookie banner to accept or reject analytics cookies, block cookies in your browser, use Google's opt-out tools, or install browser extensions that limit tracking. Essential cookies required for sign-in may still be needed to use the app.
Cookies
We use cookies and local storage to operate VeloTape and to measure site usage when you accept analytics cookies.
- Essential: Authentication sessions (Clerk), locale preference, and security tokens required for the app to function.
- Analytics: GA4 cookies and identifiers after you accept analytics cookies in our banner. Rejecting analytics cookies prevents GA4 from loading.
- Preferences: Theme (light/dark) and similar UI settings stored on your device.
Retention and deletion
We keep your data while your account is active and as needed to provide VeloTape. If you delete your account through Settings or by contacting us, we delete or anonymize personal data associated with your account, subject to limited backup retention.
Encrypted backups may retain fragments of your data for a short period (typically up to 30 days) before automatic purging. We may retain minimal records where required by law.
Security
We use technical and organizational measures to protect personal data, including TLS encryption in transit, access controls, and encryption for broker credentials at rest. Our infrastructure providers are required to maintain appropriate safeguards.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials confidential. Contact us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
Your rights and choices
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, or to object to certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@velotape.com.
- Access: Request a copy of personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Update account details in Settings or ask us to correct inaccurate data.
- Deletion: Delete your account or request erasure of your personal data.
- Portability: Request an export of your journal data where technically feasible.
- Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests, where applicable law provides this right.
International transfers
VeloTape may process data in countries other than your own through our service providers (for example, the United States). Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent mechanisms.
Children
VeloTape is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact privacy@velotape.com and we will delete it.
